Northrop Grumman Symphonies for Schools

Northrop Grumman Symphonies for Schools introduces students aged 9-18 to the Los Angeles Philharmonic through a program that is designed especially for them-from preparatory materials, to a fun, informative and thrilling musical experience. The concerts, held for students in grades 3-12, have an age-appropriate repertoire, a host, and provide a multi-media approach to the music.

Goals:

  • Develop teachers' and students' awareness and appreciation of symphonic music.
  • Provide teachers with the resources to adequately prepare their students for concert attendance thereby maximizing students' learning and interest.
  • Engage students with music through specially designed performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
  • Provide an opportunity for students to travel beyond their familiar surroundings for an exciting new adventure.

Join us in exploring L.A.’s remarkable architectural icon, Walt Disney Concert Hall, through Wing on Wing – a composition inspired by the Hall, written by our own Music Director, Esa-Pekka Salonen. Allow yourself to journey with us through Wing on Wing as the musicians and artists of the Los Angeles Philharmonic lead you into a composer’s imagination. You and your students will be transported into the story of Wing on Wing – a vision of water, fish, storms and ships. Ultimately, it is a story about having the courage to be creative and pursue one’s dreams. As always, the Los Angeles Philharmonic promises a guided listening experience filled with art of all kinds and incredible music that will fill your imagination!

Join us in exploring L.A.’s architectural icon, Walt Disney Concert Hall. Get to know this remarkable building, the design, and the feeling it evokes through Wing on Wing, Los Angeles Philharmonic Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen’s composition inspired by the Hall. Following this example, four local high school composers premiere their own pieces celebrating different aspects of the Hall. Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and educator Steven Stucky hosts this concert – highlighting the compositional process and unusual instrumentation including the most regal of all instruments – Walt Disney Concert Hall itself.
