Sound of Music Benefit
Kaper Award Winner
Guest musicians Catherine Ransom, Jonathan Karoly

The West Valley Committee for the Los Angeles Philharmonic is an Affiliate group based in the San Fernando Valley. The Committee's purpose is to support the Los Angeles Philharmonic and its various youth education programs. We are a congenial group of volunteers who meet in members' homes once a month from September to May. Programs vary in subject matter from music, art, local history and seasonal celebrations.

The primary focus of the West Valley Committee is supporting music education through the following activities:

  • Docent support at the Toyota Symphonies for Youth presented by the L.A. Philharmonic each season;
  • Presentation of the Music Mobile program to 3rd graders in the San Fernando Valley;
  • Donation of a scholarship each year to a winner of the Bronislaw Kaper Awards, a competition for young musicians sponsored by the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

Another major activity of the group is fundraising for the orchestra. Some examples of West Valley Committee fundraising benefits are:

  • "Sounds of Music" benefit at the Frank Nix home in May 2004
  • Los Angeles Philharmonic musicians Catherine Ransom (flute) and Jonathan Karoly (cello) performance at a fundraiser in February 2004
  • Sunday afternoon music with Ralph Heidsiek and the Ancora Trio in November 2003
  • Hoedown at the William S. Hart Ranch in May 2003

Proceeds from such events have generated $10,000 per year for the orchestra for the past four years.
